Bunions

Bunions are one of the most common foot deformities. They occur when a displacement of the bone under the big toe causes that toe to move towards the others, creating a bony prominence on the side of the foot. Over time, the big toe may come to rest under or over the second toe.

Symptoms may include:

  • An enlarged and sometimes painful inflamed ball joint on the outside edge of the foot.
  • Pain and swelling over the big toe joint, often made worse by pressure from shoes.
  • Hard, callused and sometimes red skin, caused by toes overlapping.
  • Limited movement in the big toe and curling of the lesser toes.
  • Narrowness in the rear part of the foot, requiring extra support.

As bunions worsen, well-fitting comfortable shoes can become increasingly difficult to find. Off-the-shelf wide-fitting shoes may give room over the ball of the foot but narrow over the toes, or provide too much width towards the back of the shoe.

Gilbert & Lisson create bespoke, made-to-measure shoes that are comfortable, stylish and carefully designed to draw the eye away from an enlarged toe joint.
